Maryland’s latest millionaire has come forward to claim her prize in the Mega Millions jackpot.
The winner is a grandmother of two who wishes to remain anonymous.
The numbers were drawn Tuesday.
Her fiance told her Tuesday night before they went to bed that they would wake up millionaires. When the couple got up, the Mount Airy woman checked her tickets and realized it was true. However, she says she just didn’t believe it.
“I am still in denial,” said the grandmother-of-two- who chose to remain anonymous. “I even drove by the store the next day to see if it was real. One look at the parking lot with all the news vans and I knew it was true.”
She’ll get 12-point-6 million dollars after taxes. The woman says she plans on buying a beach house that overlooks the ocean, but did not say where it would be.
“This will be the first time anyone from our family has ever owned a home,” the winner told Lottery officials. “There have been so many winners in Western Maryland lately, we’re glad we were one of them.”
The winning ticket was purchased at Mount Airy Shell, located at 649 Lakeview Drive in Mount Airy. For selling the winning ticket, the retailer will receive a $26,000 commission.
This is the first Mega Millions jackpot win in Maryland since three public education employees shared the $218.6 million portion of the record-breaking $656 million jackpot in March 2012.
